  1. That starting school is compulsory?

    Or is that too obvious?

  2. Yes, that is what I meant, Anne. I have seen the same statement lately in various newspapers, even respectable ones. I have a horrible suspicion that people are starting to forget that there has never been compulsory schooling in this country and like to remind folk of this from time to time.

  3. I like to remind them that there has never been compulsory schooling in this country to Webb.

  4. Particularly irritating considering that NFER commissioned the research into relationships with home educators back in 2007, didn't they?

  5. Goodness me, we're all agreeing! Never mind, I'm sure normal service will be resumed shortly.

And what I noticed about the NFER was the EU symbol prominently displayed, and given their mania for standardisation it wouldn't surprise me if anything they tried to say would be quietly edited out.

Indeed yes, but I am seeing this statement in various places lately. Graham Paeton, Education Editor for the Daily Telegraph recently mentioned casually that children in this country are obliged by law to start school at five.
