Comments Disaster
While attempting to clear the remaining unmoderated comments from here, I have inadvertantly managed to delete some more recent ones. There was no sinister intent behind this. I noticed that the latest post I have made had no space for comments and knowing how suspicious some people are, I decided to try and enable the comments. This was a mistake. As I say, the result is a lot of lost comments and still no comments space on the most recent post. Anybody wishing to comment on that can do so here. I think that embedding the video clip might have something to do with this.

It really is most bizarre. Even when a person tries to repost comments, they disappear a few minutes later.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that this is my fault. As Sarah in Italy said, this is something which is happening to blogspot at the moment. I dare say though, that this will not prevent the conspiracy theorists from having a field-day!
ReplyDeleteAllie says-It's something of a competition, isn't it? Women aren't immune to being competitive when it comes to their children's achievements but perhaps men tend to be more extreme in that? I was just pointing out that simons daughter had won chess medal for a very very weak section! and never got a english chess grade nor is they any record of her playing chess against adults. everyone in the chess world know that the chess challenge tournments for juniors run by M. Basman are very weak! some call them mickey mouse events! but of course the reporter never knew that and webb never told him did you webb?
ReplyDeleteI have found the comments and am putting them up by hand. Unfortunately, this means that it looks as though they are all mine!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous' comment above has, perhaps, illustrated another aspect of hothousing. It's something of a competition, isn't it? Women aren't immune to being competitive when it comes to their children's achievements but perhaps men tend to be more extreme in that? I think that the most important thing to remember, however, is that these cases are a tiny number. They have nothing to do with the lives of the vast majority of home educators. It isn't exactly newsworthy that most home educated children are pottering along learning happily - but it is true. Sadly, when you're a minority, the media will often define you by extreme cases that pander to their prejudices.
ReplyDeletethose medals your daughter won where for a very weak girls section at chess know as the mickey mouse events! why has your daughter not got a FIDE chess grade? why did she give up and not move up to play real chess against adults? i can find no record of the grade she reached before giving up? A lot of those mickey mouse events for chess are not graded!
ReplyDelete'those medals your daughter won where for a very weak girls section at chess '
ReplyDeleteDo wake up Mr Williams! Those medals were for fencing, not chess. I think that you must have chess on the brain.
Heehee- was terribly confused for a moment thinking you had morphed into a terrible parody of Mr. Williams! No parody could be as bad as the actuality of him!
ReplyDeleteLisa

ReplyDeleteLisa
you know nothing about us Lisa? or about Mr Williams only what the LA have said? and after all LA nver lie do they?
Webb one of thes trophy's says UK chess challenge 2003 megafinal 2003 that is the mickey mouse event run by M. Basman it is a very very weak all girls section where the games are not ECF or FIDE chess rated!
'Heehee- was terribly confused for a moment thinking you had morphed into a terrible parody of Mr. Williams! No parody could be as bad as the actuality of him! Lisa '
ReplyDeleteWhat a nightmarish idea!
'that is the mickey mouse event run by M. Basman'
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately Mr Williams, your definition of 'Mickey Mouse' events tends to be at odds with the rest of the chess world. I observe that your son was not invited to the World Youth Trials because he didn't play at qualifying events such as the London Junior. This too you describe as a 'Mickey Mouse' affair. Your view of chess is a little strange and I could not conscientiously encourage readers to set too much store by your opinions on the matter. You are often at loggerheads with everybody else in the chess world.
Peter has played chess for England twice aboard has your daughter?
ReplyDeletePeter has a FIDE chess grade of 2130 abd ECF grade 193 making him the 2nd best under 14 in the UK!
the Megafinal is a Mickey mouse event compared to the London Junior depends who enters Peter would not play in thes event as he belives his chess grade does his speaking what grade did your daughter reach?
we not at loggerheads with any one in the chess world have many frinds in the chess world Peter is friends with many chess grandmasters!
Peter played chess in Croatia for England and in Montenegro! made lots of friends to!
ReplyDeletei have seached the english chess records for your duaghter and can not find a current or inactive chess grade for your daughter this suggest to me that she has NEVER player a rated chess game under tournment conditions.
ReplyDeleteits nothing to be ashamed about Webb just tell the truth what rated grade did your daughter get to? and of course show us the evidence for her grade as it appears to be missing from the English chess federation grading database!
' and of course show us the evidence for her grade as it appears to be missing from the English chess federation grading database!'
ReplyDeleteAs I remarked above, you seem to have chess on the brain! Let me try and clear this up once and for all. My daughter has had many hobbies in the past. None of them have been her life's work; they were simply things which she did for a few years. Among these hobbies have been fencing, riding and jumping, ballet, gymnastics, bell ringing and of course chess. In each of the hobbies, she pursued it to a certain level and then switched after two or three years to aomething else. Some of the hobbies were contemporaneous; at one time she was entering gymkhanas, fencing at tournaments, ringing quarter peals on church bells and taking ballet examinations all in the same fortnight! She has not played in any chess tournaments since 2003, when she was nine. It is therefore hardly surprising that you should find no record of her. She gave up bell ringing 2006 and so you would also find no record of her in that hobby either.
Webb says-She has not played in any chess tournaments since 2003, when she was nine. It is therefore hardly surprising that you should find no record of her.
ReplyDeleteYou would find a record of her if she had played a rated chess game as you can go back over the records so the answer is your daughter has never played a rated chess game this strongly suggest she only ever played in very weak non graded girl sections why did you fail to tell the reporter about this?
Peter only plays rated ecf and FIDE chess games against very strong adult players. are you not pleased that Peter is the 2nd best U14 chess player in the UK Webb?
You appear to Have LA's Balls/Graham Badman home visits on your brain why?
'why did you fail to tell the reporter about this?'
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly enough, the subject of chess didn't come up. Not everybody eats drinks and breathes chess. For many it is only a small part of a broader life.
' I think that the most important thing to remember, however, is that these cases are a tiny number. They have nothing to do with the lives of the vast majority of home educators.'
ReplyDeleteI think that this quite true. Unfortunately, 'home educated child becomes prostitute' is a far catchier headline than 'home educated child leads normal and unremarkable life'!
Webb says-Surprisingly enough, the subject of chess didn't come up. Not everybody eats drinks and breathes chess. For many it is only a small part of a broader life.
ReplyDeleteBut the film crew zoomed in on the chess trophy! you could have pointed out that this trophy was for a very weak girls section!
as for eating and drinking chess children could do a lot worse things such as hanging about on the streets causing trouble something Peter never does!
you not said how pleased you are that Peter has played chess for England Webb? and that Peter took an active role in defeating the children's bill!
OMG! Mr Williams - I'm assuming these insane, chess obsessed rantings against Simon are from you - give it up. Stop making this into a personal crusade against Simon Webb. He is not the cause of your problems and I don't understand why you've made him your whipping boy.
ReplyDeleteGet on with home educating your son and get over yourself.
Oh my goodness- is there any kind of Chess Anonymous organisation anywhere? If not- I think we have ouselves a founding member...
ReplyDeleteI think it is lovely for Simone to have had the chance, and choice, to do so many varied activites in her young life. As with everything, some things you love to do and progress with over a long period of time. Other things come and go, probably opening many other doors along the way.
I have to say chess talk (not chess itself mind) bores the crap out of me. Just as much, I'm betting, as dog agility would to you Mr. W. However dog agility doesn't define me or my life, it is just a tiny part of me and the activites I take part in.
Would I ever tell a cameraman off for sweeping over my dog agility trophy cabinet and feel the need to explain each award to him in depth, when discussing home education? Of course not! How bizarre would that be?
"As Sarah in Italy said, this is something which is happening to blogspot at the moment."
ReplyDeleteand it is not just here either, damn glitch is following me on other blogs too.
I am thinking of finally changing to wordpress and may go on a one woman campaign to convince everybody else to do likewise.
Cos this is silly. You don't leave an effing glitch running for flaming months without addressing it.
Am very fed up.

Webb is part of the problem as he was very active in trying to get children's bill passed with bits about home education in it dont you remember? Webb also met old crazy Badman as did his daughter? and now his daughter sucks up to loser Ed Balls!

ReplyDeleteif those awards where for your child with the dog you may well wish to point out what each of them was for how hard easy they where? why not? if film crew zoom in on one i would expect any one to tel lthe viewer what it was for how hard the child had to work to get the award?
just for the record Peter does many other thing aside from chess such as trampline tackwon do scouts model makeing and he loves Maths and making films with his video camera.
ReplyDeleteof course if you think Peter not geting a suitable full time education then feel free to phone Hampshire county council to report us! you want the number any one?LOL
'if film crew zoom in on one i would expect any one to tel lthe viewer what it was for how hard the child had to work to get the award?'
ReplyDeleteThis is so completely barking mad, that I shall not be responding to any further questions on the subject! Firstly, I was not in my daughter's bedroom when the cameraman was filming and so had no idea until the programme was aired, what shots they would use. Secendly, even if I had been there, I seriously doubt that I would have felt the need to point out and comment upon everything the camera showed.
'Ah yes, I see that you are filming those fencing medals. My daughter won them at Ashmole School in Enfield last year. She is one of the best fencers in South West Essex, you know. Now that trophy there was from a chess tournament in 2000. My daughter was the best under seven chess player in the county ten years ago. The rosettes? Well, my daughter jumped a clear round in a little local gymkhana when she was thirteen.'
None of these things are of any great significance, they are just the sort of prizes and memntos which most children collect over the years. She is not a world class fencer or rider, nor a fantastically gifted chess player. These were hobbies which she took up for a while. As I say, I think that we have exhausted this topic and I have no more to say on it.
Webb says-My daughter was the best under seven chess player in the county ten years ago.
ReplyDeleteShe was not the best under ten chess player in the county as she played NO rated chess games! and has never had a chess grade! nor has she ever played chess for England!
seven whoops
ReplyDeleteWebb says-This is so completely barking mad,
ReplyDeleteyou always call anything you dont agree with as mad Webb!
