Injection of new blood

I was contacted a short while ago by somebody who is running an information day for home educators and professionals involved with home education. She wished to publicise this blog and wondered if I had any objection to this being done. The more the merrier is my general feeling about this and so we should soon be seeing a few new people here. I was going to ask some of the regulars here to try and be a little more civilised and polite, but I have noticed lately that everything seems to be pretty affable here and so that does not seem necessary. It would be good to have some professionals expressing their opinions here, a a counterbalance to some of the loopier views which we sometimes see.

This coming Thursday on Channel 4 at 9PM is a chance to see one of our old regulars. The programme Child Genius is being shown, which includes a bit about Peter Williams, the fourteen year old, home educated chess player. This promises to be worth watching, if only to see more of Mr Williams senior. It is to be hoped that this programme provides the general public with a positive and encouraging picture of home education.

No the film is rubbish webb and does not show home education in a postive way! the film for some unknow reason will not show the film of Peter at Taekwon- do mixing with other children the film crew also refused to film Peter at trampline club said it wanted to film Peter with his friends but then changed there mind many of Peter friends where very keen to be on tv! film crew appeared to want to film Peter in the back garden. The film also does not show trip to London this was filmed to show Peter is allowed out of the cellar sometimes LOL very little of me in it Webb i was filmed loads! i give my views on home education to but your not see any of it! such a shame!
it was really funny they come over to Guernsey to show us film of the bits with Peter in it and we told them it was rubbish all that way they come to be told it is no good! good news is that Peter won 60 pounds at chess tournment for adults she could have filmed this! so my advice is dont watch it dont know about the rest of the film but the bits with Peter in it are rubbish.Peter him self has told them he is unhappy with the film and wants to know why many postive things he does where left out! the director appeared to have no answer as to why he left so many postive things about Peter out of the film! i wonder if there are trying to shown home education in a bad light? some of film of peter is five years old in the new film to that does not really make much sense going over old issues! we had almost forgotton about them! good job it all be forgotton in a weeks time fish and chip paper the next day!

  3. Could you please tell us more about the information day for HE'ers and professionals? Where, when etc? It might be worth directing new HE'ers to.

I don't think I can possibly bear to watch the film.

  5. All I know about this Mrs Anon, is what I was told in the email. It is organised by ESCC, which I take to mean East Sussex County Council, and will be 'an event which would provide information on HE and act as an information point.' It is happening one day this week. More than that, I do not know.

  6. Hang on, it's being organised by a local authority? And they want to publicise this blog at this event? How odd. It's not exactly a 'how to HE' blog is it?

  7. But he's a home educator who says what LAs want to hear.

That's interesting. I haven't heard a peep about it on our local list and we're in that neck of the woods. It's not our LA because Brighton and Hove is a separate authority but I know several people who live in East Sussex.

It's not, but apparently the woman who works for the LA is a home educator heself and likes my blog. She warned me that some of the people who will be going to this event are very anti HE and some of the home educators are very gung ho. We shall just have to wait and see who turns up.

  10. Peter, Don't you think that whatever the facts, any TV documentary is bound to be selective - ie only show the bits that fit their pre-conceived ideas of what they want to show? I am sure it must be frustrating, but I expect that your feelings match many who have appeared in similar "documetaries"?

But the facts are very inportant Julie! such as Peter going to Taekwon-do classes twice a week where Peter mixes with children adults of all ages in the class!this was filmed but will not be shown! trip to london was filmed but will not be shown! Peter will be telling the Taekwon-do class on wedersday that after all that filming none of us are in film!
The film is supposed to be about following Peter life what he does etc.so why have a number of postive things about Peter been left out? The film on thursday with the bits about Peter in it are not good and it will not shown home education in a postive way. Also a private school has allowed itself to be draged into this matter over something that happened 5 years ago! action will be taken by us over all of this!

  13. I would never trust that I would be properly represented on a tv documentary. That's why I've never volunteered to be in one. You just don't have any real control over what gets broadcast and once it's out there it never goes away.

well the 2nd film about Peter was good and did include filming of Peter at scouts and a maths class as well as the chess! but the new film to be shown on Thursday is not good and does not show home education in a postive way something we are very unhappy with and the director is well aware of this! and we will be taking action over this! the only good thin i guess is we where paid something webb will be pleased to know!

  15. I watched CG3 and thought it was very negative about HE and Peter's educational environment. We opted not to do another episode and feel we had a lucky escape. W2W have their on agenda and it is what they want to show - usually one half of the picture! Interviews get edited to make the viewer think you are saying something else.

I wish Peter and his family all the best.
