A Catholic perspective on home education

I found this interesting; looking at home education from one Catholic point of view.

  1. Interesting article - - here in the UK of course most Catholic schoos (and other church schools) are free, so there isn't the same financial considerations. However I do know that even here some churches do find the concept of HE difficult - because the families "should" be supporting the local church schools, or because the children are required to be "salt and light" in those schools or because the mothers of the children in HE families aren't available for church work due to the time factors.

  2. 'because the mothers of the children in HE families aren't available for church work due to the time factors.'

Round here, the mothers doing church work are all working their passage for a place at the onlt decent secondary school in the area. You need a ten year record of church attendance, plus a show of enthusiasm. This means that loads of parents help out up to the age of eleven, but in most churches they stop attending at that point. I ran the youth club at our church for some years, as well as helping out at toddler time. Once it was clear that I was not doing it to get my daughter into the right school, I began to get some very odd looks. People were clearly thinking, 'What's his game? If he's not after a reference from the priest for a school admission, why is he hanging round the church like this?"

  3. 'He also believes it is psychologically unhealthy for mothers to spend 24 hours a day with their children as they get older, and it’s academically nearly impossible for one person to teach all that is included in a modern high school curriculum.'

    Rolling my eyes...
